The operating fix is a weighbridge feeding an MRP lot-tracking system, a mechanical re-thresher, a screw press to dewater husks, and a DAF unit for on-site effluent treatment.

Weigh Whole Fruit, Flesh Yield, and Husk Mass

Waste is invisible unless you weigh it. A factory bringing in 8 tonnes of D197 Musang King per day should record three weights at the gate: whole fruit, extracted flesh, and outbound husks. A weighbridge (Weightronix units are common around Raub and Segamat) plus an Odoo 17 MRP receiving point gives you the core yield metric: 28–33% flesh on quality Musang King fruit.

When the yield drops below 28%, you are paying RM 28–33 per kg for fruit that cannot be extracted cleanly. The supplier is loading under-ripe fruit, and you can see it in the milky sap staining the cutting tables. Pin that yield variance to each plantation batch, not to the monthly average. That one report tightens supplier contracts and stops you from dumping overpriced husk. Fix a second scale at the sorting line, grade flesh into A (whole frozen), B (broken), and C (paste only) before freezing, and record the bins. Without lot-level data, every decision below is guesswork.

Run Re-Threshers to Strip Lined Husks

Manual spoon-scraping loses 4–6% of the whole fruit as pulp still attached to the husk lining. On an 8-tonne intake that is 320–480 kg per day. Workers in a hurry leave the juicy white endocarp and the cup-shaped flesh around the seed.

A rubber-paddle drum thresher, the same principle as palm fruit threshing but running at 20–30 RPM with soft paddles, recovers roughly 60% of that residual pulp before the husk reaches the bin. The recovered slurry is not whole-flesh grade, but it is perfectly safe after pasteurisation and sells at RM 12–15/kg as durian puree to bakeries in Singapore and Hong Kong. Recovering 260 kg/day at RM 14/kg adds RM 3,640 gross daily; the machine pays for itself within one Musang King season. Pass the threshed husk over a 3 mm vibrating screen to catch anything the paddles missed.

Reclassify Culls into Chips and Paste

Rain-split fruit, ground-drop fruit, and fruit crushed in transit all arrive at the waste bin today. All of it is salvageable if you know the tree source and the flesh passes a visual check. Broken flesh freezes for paste; softened flesh goes into lempuk; flesh that has started to soften but not ferment moves to vacuum frying.

Vacuum frying is non-negotiable here because durian flesh exceeds 34% sugar. Frying at atmospheric pressure burns the flesh before it crisps. A 100 kg/batch vacuum fryer running at 90°C and -0.92 bar produces the “Musang King chips” you see in KL retail, with a food cost below RM 3/kg and about 350 mL of palm oil consumed per kg of chips. Imported lines land around RM 400,000 installed; a factory feeding 60 kg of cull flesh per day through a chip line recovers that capital in roughly 18 months.

Dewater Husks, Compost, and Sell the Soil

Husks make up 60–70% of inbound fruit weight and hold about 75% water. Every wet tonne sitting on the trailer is paying tipping fees at RM 60–80 per tonne. A twin-screw press drops the moisture from 70% to 50%, cutting disposal weight by a third. At 4.8 tonnes of husk per day, that is roughly RM 1,800 saved per week in cartage and tipping.

Do not landfill the pressed husk either. Windrow-compost it for six weeks with shredded oil-palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) and dried effluent sludge from the DAF unit below; durian husk alone composts too slowly. The output sells to landscapers and plantation nurseries at RM 85–120 per tonne. Above 10 tonnes of fruit input per day, a modular anaerobic digester becomes justifiable, feeding biogas to the pasteurizer boiler and removing the LPG line entirely.

Treat Washwater On-Site, Not by Tanker

Fruit washing and floor cleaning generate 10–15 m³ of effluent per day with BOD in the 2,500–3,500 mg/L range. Municipal sewers will not accept that without heavy surcharges, so most factories haul the liquid out in 3,000-L tankers at RM 130–180 per load. At four to five loads daily, that is RM 3,000–3,750 every week.

The layout used by the newer Segamat and Chaah factories is sequential: a 2 mm rotating drum screen removes fibre, a dissolved air flotation (DAF) tank with alum and polymer pulls out oils and suspended solids, and a moving-bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) drops BOD below 20 mg/L so the water recycles for final rinsing. Malaysian environmental contractors such as Zigma Global Enviro supply packaged DAF/MBBR skids sized for 25 m³/day at roughly RM 180,000–350,000 installed, a payback of under two years versus tanker discharge. The filter press dewaters DAF sludge, and the cake composts alongside the husk.

System / Tactic

Key Feature

Best For

Weighbridge + Odoo 17 MRP

Per-batch flesh-yield tracking against fruit lots

Identifying under-ripe Musang King deliveries

Rubber-paddle drum thresher

Recovers 60% of residual pulp from husk linings

Turning up to 260 kg/day of paste-grade flesh into revenue

100 kg/batch vacuum fryer

Frying at 90°C, -0.92 bar avoids caramelisation

Cull and rain-split flesh into retail chips

Twin-screw husk press

Reduces moisture from 70% to 50%, cutting cartage weight

Lowering daily landfill tipping charges

DAF + MBBR package (e.g. Zigma Global Enviro)

BOD from 2,500 mg/L to below 20 mg/L on site

Replacing RM 3,000/week in tanker haulage fees

Ready to Accelerate Your Digital Growth Strategy?

Partner with an industry-leading digital agency to upscale your infrastructure today.

Get Started for Free Today

Quick Summary: Durian processors in Pahang and Johor cut waste costs by attacking three leaks: pulp stuck to husks after hand-scraping, wet fibre that still pays landfill tipping fees by the tonne, and high-BOD washwater hauled away in tankers.
